About the work
About the work
"Down to Earth" brings the viewer physically closer to the subject. Actually standing in the middle of the picture and being part of the subject of the artists interest strengthens the feeling of taking part in the picture. Down to Earth shows the ground in both a reality-intens and a metaphorical sense. Both covering the ground, and as according to the tradition, making it more comfortable to walk on, and shoving it in a new more intense way. While standing in the middle of the picture, on the well used path, the viewer has to choose between fixing his gaze and interest on the forest floor, containing a rough symmetry of fir needles, dry earth and rocks, or the garden area of organized patches of grass, shrubbery and moist loam.
Like most of Weston's recent work, Down to Earth is about the perceptions of one's surroundings and the way we percive and filter reality through our eyes and mind. But unlike the other series he has made like,' Spectator ' or 'Coffee break', 'Down to Earth' is much more metaphorical and symbolic in its build-up. Not only about the eye and mind in relation to the surrounding environment, but also about the basis of one's perception of life, and the way one chooses to live it.
